Privacy and Panelists

Privacy policies are often complicated and confusing. That’s why we’ve focused on answering some key questions about how Nielsen treats your personal information.

What kind of information do you collect about me?

If you join a Nielsen panel or participate in a Nielsen survey, we will ask you for your name and address and perhaps the names of the other members of your household. We will ask you for some demographic details, such as your level of education, age and ethnicity. We will collect your viewing and buying behavior and additional information from companies that have a legal right to provide such information to us.

Do you keep my information confidential?

We deeply value your trust and protect the identities of our panelists. We use tools and methods to make sure that there is no reasonable possibility of identifying an individual panelist in the reports that we create for our clients. We will NOT use your personal identifying information to advertise, promote or market goods or services directly to you, and we do not allow our clients to market directly to you. For example, we combine the responses we collect from you with the responses of others to produce “aggregated” reports.

We also create scientific reports based on modeled information. “Modeled information” is data we have developed based on demographic and behavioral characteristics (like your gender, age, TV watching habits, websites visited) to predict what people with similar or matching characteristics would watch or buy.

How do you safeguard my information?

The security of data and the protection of personal information are essential to our success and credibility. We have established security measures, including encryption methods and access protocols, to help protect the security and confidentiality of your data while controlled by us.

Do you measure what I do on my computer or my mobile device?

If you agree to participate in one of our online or mobile panels, the metering software or application that you install onto your device collects information about what you do on your device, and as you surf the Internet.

Do you collect info on just me – or my whole family? And, what about my children?

We prefer to collect information about your entire household when you take a Nielsen survey or join a panel. Receiving data from your entire household helps provide a more robust understanding of consumer behavior.

We take the privacy and safety of children very seriously. If we collect information about, or get opinions from minor children, we do so only with the consent of the child’s parent or guardian.

What is my information used for?

Nielsen researches what consumers watch, buy, their preferences and behaviors. The more our clients know about consumers, the better they can make products and services tailored to what you want and need.

Do you give my information to anyone else?

We are very protective of your information. We are a market research and measurement company; we are not direct marketers and we don’t sell your contact information to others. Occasionally, we work with other companies for the purposes of market research or product development, and if we let them see your information, we require those other companies to maintain the confidentiality and security of your information.

Will you give my information to telemarketers?

Absolutely not. The contact information that you give Nielsen is not given out for promotional purposes.

What happens to my information after it’s used?

Your data may stay stored with us for market research purposes. It might be stored in the U.S. or abroad, but our privacy policy firmly applies in either case.

What if I want to see or delete the information you have on me?

Simply contact us and ask to view or delete this data at any time.
